A LUSAKA woman has been charged with murder for crushing the head of her four-day-old baby to death after a marital dispute.

This is in a case in which Dorica Banda, 28, of Kanyama was initially charged with infanticide but the charge was yesterday changed to murder when she appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate NMwaka Mikalile.

The State informed the court that the charge had been amended from infanticide to murder and that the Director of Public Prosecutions had since issued a certificate for committing Banda to the High Court for trial.

It is alleged that on February 5, , four days after giving birth, Banda willfully crushed her baby to death and threw its body into a pit latrine. This was after Banda differed with her husband, leading the couple to separate.

In the same court, a 17-year-old Senegalese girl pleaded not guilty to one count of house breaking and another count of escaping from lawful custody.

It is alleged that on March 26, the girl broke into the house of Rachel Tembo and stole a pair of bed sheets, a curtain, two bowls and two chitenge materials all valued at K580.

In the second count the juvenile is accused of escaping from Mandevu police post cells without authority.

Later Magistrate Mikalile granted her K500 bail with two sureties working for reputable organisations.
